Offended

On Sunday nights, The Boy cooks us dinner and we watch a TV show while we eat. Kitten Thunder does their best not to covet our dinner and then offers some post dinner snuggles to help with my digestion.

Today I added the extra entertainment of knitting after dinner. Oliver loves to knit. It makes him purr to have yarn pulled between his toes.

After we’d been knitting for a while, though, he started to feel bad about the neglected Boy. He left me and went to lie down on the foot of the recliner.

Minutes later, The Boy got up. What!?! Oliver was highly offended. After all, he was lying next to The Boy’s feet at great personal risk. The grey kitten could have been infected by cooties at any moment. And to have his magnanimous gesture just –

– Hey, is that a warm spot on the chair?

Hand Off

The Boy and I went to the book store this afternoon. On our way back, we picked up some food from the grocery store. And when we got home, of course, Obi needed a belly rub.

As I was finishing the unloading of groceries, The Boy came into the kitchen with a gotten kitten. Obi likes when he is gotten – it makes him tall and he tries to get The Boy to go see interesting things while he is tall.

This time, though, The Boy wanted to cook dinner. He asked the brown kitten if he would get down. As I put some items on the stairs to the bedroom I said, “or you could wait for just a sec and we’ll do a hand off.”

Obi said he was not interested in a hand off. No no no no.

But he was, in fact, handed over to me and The Boy started cooking. Once Obi knew what a hand off was, he was actually okay with it. Only slightly less tall, he had a good vantage for dinner making.

After dinner, Obi jumped into The Boy’s lap. He sat there for an entire hour, looking very happy. Even Tail was happy…ish. Unfortunately for the comfortable brown kitten, The Boy doesn’t sit still for very long. Watching one program from start to finish without any side activity was as much as he could take.

He attempted a hand off.

Obi was not interested.

No no no no no.

Oliver has a bag. This is his new favorite place to lay and a spot for which he has forsaken the post-breakfast snuggle. Once in a while Obi comes in to remind him that Tail knocked the bag off the coffee table, so Tail’s attached kitten should be allowed to lay on the bag. The grey kitten sees the reason in this…but he doesn’t get off the bag.

***

This week, we have two new programs on OutTV. First off, there is a little black kitteh wandering around. He looks pretty healthy so he obviously belongs to someone. But he is claiming a lot of territory in the neighborhood.

Yesterday, Black Kitteh had a squirrel up a light post. The squirrel was hanging out about ten feet off the ground, trash talking the kitten. Eventually the kitten gave up and walked away. Except he didn’t give up. He hid around the corner and waited for the squirrel to come down. Unfortunately for him, the squirrel (and I) was not fooled. The squirrel came down the pole and crossed the street to our house. Obi and I watched as Black Kitteh chased the squirrel from one channel of OutTV to the next and the next until they were on the Jeff Channel.

Obi doesn’t go outside but he did not want another kitten in his Out.

The more exciting programming is a sharp-shinned hawk that has moved into the neighborhood. She is very talkative and, though we hardly see her, we hear her cry all the time.

Yesterday, Obi was napping on the back of the couch while I worked. He was enjoying some Smell-O-Vision from the Jeff Channel and he was stretched out very flat. As flat, I thought, as he could get.

Until the hawk swooped down between our house and Jeff’s house and screamed just outside our window. She was so close I could hear her wings. The hair stood on the back of my neck.

And the cat? Got flatter.
